Passing through the Old Gate, we climb to the ancient Caprera Square surrounded by monumental buildings, including the church of St Francis, which has been enlarged several times. It was last renovated in the late 15th century and features wall frescoes and a remarkable collection of altar panels and more. Today the church has become the Civic Art Gallery. Notable buildings of artistic value include the Cathedral, an ancient Romanesque building that was later renovated and which houses the remains of the patron saint, Rinaldo.
Next to the cathedral is the Civic Tower, an imposing 11th-century keep, the only remnant of the ancient fortress. Also of great interest is the Poor Clares Monastery with the Church of St. John, a Baroque masterpiece, inside.
In the heart of the historic centre there are fine buildings. Descending to the west, near the 13th-century church of Saint Clare, is Nocera’s last monumental hub: the neo-Gothic style Church of San Filippo, along with the square and porticoes that rest on the old walls. Also in this urban area dating from the late 19th century is the “Alphatenia” Theatre, a good example of eclectic architecture with an Art Nouveau touch.
